It’s Thanksgiving again! I know you have it covered – chrysanthemums, a door wreath, a delicious meal plan and a perfect table centrepiece. But how about adding a little oomph beyond the expected fall/holiday décor? How can you make your Thanksgiving guests feel extra special?
Here are our favourite ways to add pizzazz to your Thanksgiving get-together (and long after the holiday is over!)
Hang a chalkboard. Chalkboards are very on trend right now! Have a little fun with a beautifully-framed chalkboard welcoming your Thanksgiving guests and showcasing the dinner menu. (HINT: You can make your own framed chalkboard. Check online for ideas.)
Buy new chairs for your dining room. It’s all about Thanksgiving dinner – and of course – your dining room! Mix and match is very popular. How about two new chairs for either end of your dining table? Go luxurious with tufted wingback chairs or something sleek and modern.
Paint your front door. The art of the first impression! The weather is still warm enough for exterior painting, so give your front door a facelift. We love a classic gloss black, but bright is perfect too – sunny yellow, red, maroon or cobalt blue.
Update your powder room. Guests appreciate a beautifully-appointed powder room. Try creating a theme – what about Zen with a Buddha sculpture, candles and ethnic-inspired towels? Or add a small accent table with fresh towels, a bouquet of flowers and hand creams.
Give each guest a card with a Thanksgiving quote. Rather than name place cards, mark each guest’s seat using a place card with a Thanksgiving quote. How about Oprah’s “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more,” or “Gratitude can transform common days into Thanksgivings,” by William A. Ward.
Add warm metallics. Thanksgiving heralds the onset of warm tones in décor – yellows, golds, rusts and more. Take it a step further with metallic accessories in copper, bronze and brass. Even better, update your living room with beautiful furnishings showcasing metallic legs and trim.
Buy a hall bench. When colder weather arrives, guests need a seat to put on their boots. Treat them to a hall bench. Big or small, simple or extravagant, they will appreciate the comfort.
Bring on the plaid. We often forget the simple elegance of plaid. It’s a great décor addition for the cooler weather ahead. Why not add a plaid throw, cushions or even cloth napkins in one of the many plaids available this season. (HINT: Some plaids are woven with metallic threads for a touch of glamour.)
Decorate a non-traditional table. Yes, Thanksgiving colours make a wonderful table setting, although perhaps a little predictable! But why not be more imaginative? How about a black and white themed table with gold accents to celebrate the holiday?
Add a baker’s rack. Consider adding a baker’s rack to your kitchen. It’s both practical and beautiful – a great way to display dishware, cookware and collectibles and keeps them in easy reach! (During family gatherings like Thanksgiving, you’ll love the convenience!)
