So how do you do it?  How do you accessorize like a pro? Rule #1 is to Go Unique. Don’t settle for cookie cutter pieces that everyone buys at the big box stores. They may look okay – but have a “been there, done that” feeling. You can’t achieve “wow” without stimulating the senses with something fresh and exciting!

Here are some other guidelines for showcasing accessories in their best light:

• Personalize it. Make your accessories a reflection of you – choose things you love and display them – about your hobby, your family, your travels…
• Display in groups. One lone item has a tough time making a statement – create a grouping for impact – an odd number works best – 3 or 5 pieces.
• Make colour work. If your room is neutral, accessorize bright – and vice versa. But stick with two or three colours to keep a coordinated look.
• Try a theme. Rather than random pieces, work on a theme – beach inspired, pewter, Mexican, etc.
• Vary heights and shapes. When you’re grouping items, make it interesting – whether it’s candles, jars, framed photos, etc.
• Think symmetry… or not! Formal rooms look good with symmetrical placement – a chair flanking either side of the fireplace, for example. Casual rooms work better with asymmetrical styling – like two or three candlesticks on the same side of the mantel.
• Choose quality. Just as in personal fashion, it’s best to buy quality accessories that achieve a feeling of luxury and plenty.
