The Geometric Décor Trend: “Shape” Up Your Home!

The last time I seriously thought about geometry was Grade 10 math class. Back then, I must admit, it wasn’t my favourite subject. But this year, with fashion and home décor strongly influenced by geometric patterns, I am falling in love with circles, triangles and pyramids!Huntington Leather ChestGeometric shapes are showing up everywhere in the home. Walls, furniture, mirrors, accent pieces and upholstery to name a few. Typically, the geometric look goes with contemporary décor and bold colour – think “funky”. But this season, it’s become accessible to those who prefer traditional styling. You’ll see touches of geometric print, geometrics in pastel hues and geometric styling in furniture that works beautifully in more elegant homes.

How to Add the Geometric Look

Deciding to incorporate the geometric trend into your home is easy… but what should you add? How far should you go? A lot comes down to budget. If you just want to spend a little, look to feature geometrics in your accessories and accents. Here are a few ideas:

Rugs. You can keep your room as is and add only a bold geometric rug and WOW, what a difference! Popular choices include circles, zig zags and blocks of colour.Juniper by Surya

Pillows. There is an amazing selection available in any colour, size or material. If you are only adding a few geometric touches, bolder colour may be a good choice. Orange, cobalt, fuchsia and emerald are great options!Colorful pillows on a sofa with white brick wall in background

Wallpaper. A whole room in a strong geometric wall paper pattern is for diehard fans only – but what about an accent wall? Imagine how it could update your dining room or bedroom!

Mirrors. Most mirrors are ovals, squares or rectangles, which are of course, geometric shapes. But perhaps this is the season to be adventurous and add mirrors with real excitement! You’ll find mirrors with triangular bevels, inlays of criss-cross lines, frames with intricate angle patterns, scalloped edges and my favourite, perfectly circular mirrors.Hooker Furniture Melange

Accessories. Picture things in unexpected shapes… like square flower pots, triangular serving plates, octagon wall clocks – that’s the fun of the geometric trend. Another great idea is using multiples of geometric shapes – for example, 12 small square photos grouped on a wall or a shelf with alternating square and round plates.Caracole Classic Mirror

Styling. If you have a bigger budget, you may want to add furniture to your home in the geometric style. Some of the pieces are quite classic and blend with any home decor – the juxtaposition of looks can be stunning! Look for very clean lines in furniture; legs should be straight, not curved. You’ll find many of the pieces look retro to the 1950s and 60s. I love occasional chairs from that era with straight arms, tubular legs and simple styling. You’ll see that look again now in all the same saturated colours. Elipse Cocktail TableFinishes. Another geometric trend in furniture is to add pattern and finishes to the piece. Look for swirls, triangles and “maze-like” designs painted on the finish. A particularly beautiful touch is leather inlays in geometric patterns.Hooker Furniture MélangeAccent Pieces. Occasional furniture is a great place to add the geometric look to your home. Chests, desks, accent tables and lamps can make an excellent focal point and dramatic statement.Hooker Furniture Melange
