We’ve been discussing colours for 2016 quite a bit lately – and no wonder – a new splash of colour is a wonderful way to welcome the New Year! But what about neutrals? In a year where jewel tones and pastels are making all the headlines, suddenly there’s WHITE – Simply White in fact, Benjamin Moore’s Colour of the Year for 2016 – a soft, vanilla white that offers an alternative point of view. With white as the foundation, neutrals are a beautifully subtle choice this year, offering surprising diversity and palette range.
How to Decorate with White this Season:
In Layers. White is anything but monochromatic. Look for it in shades from crisp white to creamy white and partner it with taupes, beiges and especially with greys. Be sure to include lots of texture with this approach – a sheepskin rug, linen upholstery, lots of pillows and a nubby throw for example. Antiqued and distressed white are also trendy, often with a gentle wash of pale blue.
With Brights. In opposition to classic neutral palettes, white is also being featured with dynamic brights this season. Consider an orange accent wall, accessories in fuchsia, bright blue room doors, or bold colourful art, for example. To keep the look refined, white must be the dominant ‘colour’ with touches of bright and stick with a sleek, contemporary sensibility.
Redefining Rustic. The juxtaposition of white in a home with rugged, rustic décor is unexpectedly fabulous. Old wood floors and rough walls are renewed with a wash of white; vintage furnishings refreshed with white distressing. Add exposed wood ceiling beams for the ultimate in rustic charm.
On Furnishings. Timeless and classic, neutral furnishings are often your best investment. While traditional choices like wood trimmed sofas remain deservedly popular, new takes on the classics are also worth consideration – a recliner in grey or white, a traditionally-styled bedroom suite in distressed wood, or an elegant ivory tub chair encased in brushed gold metallic.
With Black. As we mentioned in an earlier blog, matte black is showing up everywhere this season. For a sophisticated look, pair it with white. Worried it will be harsh? Choose a distressed wood floor to create softness or add pastel upholstery or window treatments.
Highlighting Architecture. Nothing frames like white. Bright white trim and edging define a space or feature, whether cornices, window sills, baseboards, pillars or much more. New this season is white on white photo treatments using large white mattes with white frames. Create a grouping on a jewel-toned wall for a very trendy effect.
White paint has long been a decorating staple, whether to bring new life to old items, cover architectural flaws or accentuate beautiful features. This year white is elevated to new heights – discover how much light, radiance and beauty it can bring to your space!
