Of course, when we decided to redecorate the cafe, furniture was first and foremost on our minds. We went with a primarily rustic theme – aged tables, benches and barrel styled coffee tables paired with cast iron stools for a touch of contemporary edginess. For comfy conversation, we added a plush sofa (with very trendy geometric pillows). It’s a great corner to have a coffee. The accessories (wall hangings, table top items, etc.) are also on trend – blending rustic and modern in a feel-good way.

You’ll also see leather accents, gorgeous antiqued storage boxes and so much more. It really is a great place to recharge and get inspiration. Drop by for a visit and check it out.

When redecorating our cafe, we chose to blend decorating styles – relying on both rustic and contemporary. I think the results are great! If you want to mix styles, like traditional, country, modern or whatever your choice, here are some guidelines to keep the look unified:

Limit your colours. Use the same palette throughout the room (or entire home) to bring disparate pieces together. Choose perhaps 3 colours – too many colours draw attention to individual items in a room.

Match woods. You may have different styles of furniture, but if the woods are the same type or the same shade, you can still create a cohesive look.

Pick a pattern to bring it all together. Sometimes a shape or pattern can unify a room. Think stripes or polka dots or a print. The lines of a piece of furniture can also be echoed throughout a room – a scalloped edge, a curved leg, etc.

If it’s unique, focus on it! If most of your furniture and accessories match but you have one piece that is really unique, embrace it! Make it a centrepiece and build around it. Add a few touches of the unique style elsewhere in the room. What doesn’t “fit” can become the most admired item in the space.

Consider a theme. A theme done tastefully can bring a room’s different elements together. A nautical theme and a Zen retreat are a couple of ideas. Don’t overdo it – too much will look contrived.

Build a basic foundation. A few clean simple pieces, basic and not connected to a decor period, will anchor your style and give you the freedom to add cool, unique pieces.
