Decorating for Easter

I just read a report that it’s going to be a cold spring right across Canada. Ah well, there’s nothing we can do about the weather – but what we can do is start the season off right with beautiful, memorable Easter celebrations!

Happy EasterHere are a few ideas to make your home inviting for Easter entertaining:

Door decor. Buy an umbrella in a pretty pastel colour and hang it on your front door, tipped a little to the side and with the closure undone. Add lots of fabric flowers to peep out through the opening, anchor them with a ribbon tied near the bottom of the umbrella.

White and silver. These two colours look fresh and elegant together, especially for Easter! Be creative – silver candlesticks next to a white ceramic bunny; white and silver plates hung in a grouping; a silver platter with white pillar candles…and so on.Place CardEggs as place cards? Yes! Put a hardboiled egg (white or dyed) in an egg cup (plain white is nice) or on a plate. Using either a stencil, sticker or free hand, write the guest’s initial or first name on the egg and display it as a dinner placeholder. Very pretty!

Twig flowers. Spring flowers are blooming late this year…so make your own! Gather or buy some twigs and display them in a vase. Buy some small silk flowers from the dollar store; cut and stick the blooms up and down the length of the twigs.

EasterTiers of joy. Use a cake stand and other accessories to display your egg creations. Put some eggs in egg cups to vary the heights. Add twigs, teeny faux chicks, flower arrangement, whatever you can find to make a gorgeous centrepiece.

Vase anchors. If you use a clear vase, whatever you display, make the vase part of your presentation.  Here are some ideas for filler to anchor the contents:  old fashioned marbles, bird seed, beach rocks, wine corks and wait for it… kumquats! Be adventurous – find something that looks amazing!

Curtain ribbons. Just for Easter, remove the hooks from your living room curtains and replace with beautiful pastel ribbons. Be sure to hang evenly and loosely enough to open and close the curtains.

Easter eggs collectionEaster gift idea. Fill an egg carton with bright and colourfully decorated eggs. Lots of egg containers are clear plastic these days, so you can make the presentation extra pretty.

Not just for Easter. This idea is not just for Easter, but do it now for your celebrations and keep it all year long! Hardware stores sell beautiful plastic molds as backdrops for ceiling fixtures. Buy a few of varying size, paint in similar colour tones and hang on a large wall as a grouping. How about shades of yellow?

Easter tree. This tradition is very popular in Austria and Germany. Create a tree out of large twigs. You can anchor them in a flower pot with oasis (be sure to cover the top of the pot with something pretty!). Then you simply decorate the tree. Blown, dyed eggs are a must, hang them by colourful ribbons, but you can use your imagination. How about little birds from the craft store? Or make a garland of silk flowers?

Place SettingAdorned eggs. You can put these on your tree, display in a basket or special bowl, or even use as part of your place setting. Crystals, rhinestones and beads are everywhere these days. Stick some to your eggs for a shiny, spectacular display.

White lace. Easter seems like the perfect time to take out old lace tablecloths or even to use paper lace doilies as part of your dinner display, mixed with pastel touches, it’s a lovely, graceful look.

Easter eggsPolka dots. I can’t explain why, but polka dots seem Easter appropriate to me! Especially if you find something soft and subtle like pink polka dots on white. Lovely for just about everything – decorated eggs, tissue wrap, making your own napkins, cushion covers…

Easter egg huntAnd finally, something special for the kids. When my kids were younger, we created a unique Easter egg hunt. With each egg they found there was a clue, written as a rhyme, to take her to the next egg. A bit of effort? Yes. But it was so much fun – memories to cherish a lifetime.
