The sun sets on another beautiful autumn afternoon. October is winding down and the chill of November is in the air. It’s sad to say farewell to warm days, but with longer evenings and cooler temperatures come the pleasure of being indoors and getting cozy.
Nothing says cozy – or romantic – better than candles. They provide a glow that relaxes, soothes the soul and even makes your complexion look great! In fact, I keep candles on my desk and I just lit two for inspiration!
But how can you really make a statement with candles?
Light Up Your Home with Candles
Here are a few ideas…
Summer Forever. Add some sand to a wine glass and put in a white tea light candle. So pretty! Do multiples for impact.
Speaking of Wine Glasses. Tip some wine glasses or flutes upside down and add tea lights or tiny candles on top.
Wood You Try This? This makes a huge statement – great for the holidays! Get a “slice” of a tree/log about 3-4 inches thick and place a white pillar candle on top. Add some holly berries and greenery. Great on a country style table!
Twinkle Twinkle. This is my favourite candle décor idea! Place a piece of mirror on your dining room table and add white pillar candles of varying lengths. Ideally the mirror should be long and narrow (for a rectangular table) so that it acts as a centrepiece along the full length.
Reflections. Place some crystal candle holders with tall taper candles on your bathroom vanity, in front of the mirror. The mirror, crystal and flame make magic together…
Oh-So-Pretty-China. You’ll often find lovely floral china saucers without cups at flea markets for next to nothing. Or maybe you have some pretty saucers in your cupboard already. Add tiny candles for a beautiful old-world look.
Candle Cakes. This looks amazing for a special occasion. Use a layered cake tray to display candles. Be creative with sizes and colours. Add some tiny complementary décor items (silver balls, pine cones or flowers, for example) to accentuate the candles.
Dark Light. While white candles look fresh and pristine, dark candles set a romantic mood. Create a grouping of complementary dark shades like navy, maroon and purple in varying sizes.
Book Look. Taper candles in luxurious candleholders (think silver, brass or polished wood) look so elegant placed on 2-3 stacked books. Choose hardcover books with attractive binding.
Table Setting. A series of small identical candle holders can create a big impact. Picture 10 or more in a line down the centre of your dining room table or along a credenza. It’s perfect for everyday or a special occasion.
Common Scents. Never use scented candles in a dining room – they can easily overpower your dinner! Save scented candles for the bath, bedroom and living room.
Needless to say, the most important thing to remember with candles is SAFETY. Never leave candles unattended or use with flammable materials.
Draw a bath, light a lavender candle and settle in for a restful evening. Happy candle season!
