There’s no doubt that the living room is the heart of your home – and because it’s where you spend the most time with family and friends, it’s also where you have the opportunity to make your strongest style statement. With that in mind, here are a few living room trends that are hot as we head into summer 2015!
Gild. Our love of metallic continues with gild – not the loud brassy gold of decades past, but beautiful brushed gold, bronze and copper. Silver, nickel and pewter are still solid choices and you can mix and match them all for a luxurious look. You’ll see metal accents on wood furniture as well as with glass and other materials.
Collections. The living room is a great place to show off your individuality! If you have a passion or collection, design a display that celebrates it. Be creative – use the walls, mantel, bookshelves or coffee table. Always be discriminating. Choose collections that have character and add charm, not clutter.
Bold Accents. Bright, gorgeous bursts of colour are popular in living spaces right now. Accessories like cushions are a budget conscious way to add some fun and personality, but larger furniture pieces in bright colours are also very trendy. Blues, notably teal and aqua, are centre stage, but purple, coral and lime are also popular.
Neutrals. Always classic, you simply can’t go wrong with neutral living room furniture. Go for glamour in the design details, such as tufting and wraparound corners.
Rustic. This style remains popular, especially when used in tandem with contemporary elements. Distressed woods mixed with metals and more elegant choices add interest and appeal. A surprising comeback is rugged wooden beams on the ceiling. The juxtaposition against vivid white ceiling paint is quite pleasing.
Coffee Tables. Consider a statement coffee table. Try one with a glass top and ornate metal legs or a leather-topped ottoman/table, with a metal base.
Mid Century Modern. Thanks to Mad Men, this style is all the rage right now. The lines are clean and sleek. Look for pieces that provide comfort and sophistication.
Bookcases. Whether matching or in a contrasting finish, this season you’ll find bookcases in living rooms everywhere. Practical and versatile, you can store your books and they also provide a great showcase for collections. A nice touch is to paint the back wall of the bookcase in a bold or complementary colour.
