A Sneak Peek at 2018 Colours – Be Ahead of the Trend!

October 24, 2017 by Stoney Creek Furniture

As 2017 winds down, many paint companies have already revealed what colours will be on trend for 2018! Whether you’re looking to repaint one room or many, purchase new furnishings or just add new accessories – here are the very latest colour picks from the experts.

Benjamin Moore Caliente AF-290

Benjamin Moore Caliente AF-290

From Benjamin Moore: Caliente. ‘A strong, energetic red with personality to spare’, Caliente adds warmth and excitement to any space. It’s a ‘jolt of drama’ for a classic farmhouse; it adds ‘playfulness’ in a modern setting and it ‘revs up warm weathered woods, ocean grays and greens’. If you want unbridled drama, Caliente is your colour!

Behr In the Moment

Behr In the Moment

From Behr: In the Moment. Behr’s very first colour of the year ‘speaks to our society’s desire to disconnect and be present’ according to Behr. Subdued yet striking, it ‘creates harmony for interiors or exteriors’. In the Moment combines spruce blue, soft gray and lush green for a feeling of sanctuary and relaxation.

Glidden Deep Onyx

Glidden Deep Onyx

From Glidden: Deep Onyx. Deep Onyx embraces a ‘less is more, back to basics’ approach. Declaring black as the forgotten neutral, Glidden recommends Deep Onyx for an accent wall or instead of white on trim. It’s simple and no-fuss, ideal for minimalist settings, but paired with more vibrant shades, ideal in a traditional space too.

Olympic Black Magic

Olympic Black Magic

From Olympic: Black Magic. The experts say this shade addresses our need for ‘deep, comforting colours that offer a welcomed escape from the chaos of daily life’. Black Magic is a bold statement but don’t be intimidated – it’s also soothing and simply gorgeous with light furniture and accessories.

Sherwin-Williams Oceanside

Sherwin-Williams Oceanside

From Sherwin-Williams: Oceanside. Sherwin-Williams calls this deep-sea blue ‘opulent and mysterious’. We agree! It brings to mind beach vacations and the richness of the Mediterranean. Oceanside pairs well with neutrals or opposites like bright pink. Choose it for an unexpected space like a living room.

What do they have in common?

  • Deeper shades for intimacy. 2018’s rich colours are perfect for creating a space that’s private, cozy and insulated from the world outside.
  • Modern yet still classic. These timeless colours look great in contemporary, traditional or transitional settings and will look stylish way beyond 2018.
  • Many act as neutrals. While much edgier than taupe or grey, many of the new colour trends are decidedly neutral – and that means easy integration with the décor you have now and as you continue to update your home’s look.
  • Adventure in the air. Some have described 2018 colours as ‘risky’. While that’s probably an overstatement, they are definitely intense! If you’re shy about taking a big leap, remember that accessories, accent walls or half walls are great ways to sample a shade.

Stay tuned! Pantone, the world’s leading authority on colour, will be announcing its 2018 Colour of the Year shortly.

Transform Your Home with the Latest Trends in Accessories

October 16, 2017 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Just as the right jewellery and shoes can take an outfit from ordinary to wow, the right accessories can totally transform your home! What’s more, accessories are a great way to truly personalize your space. The best part? Accessories let you experiment and update your décor frequently without spending a lot!

Some of our favourite accessory trends and classic accessory ideas are below.  Discover what expresses your individuality:

Pottery & Glassware. Right now, coloured glassware is very popular, as is beautiful, brightly glazed pottery. Choose colours you love like turquoise or raspberry and showcase them on a shelf, mantel, sideboard or hall table.

Trays. We love trays, whether distressed wood, metallic, mirrored or any other material. Trays make grouping accessories easy and are also a practical choice if you choose an ottoman as your cocktail table. Add a tray just about anywhere and top it with collectibles for a one-of-a-kind display!

Creative Seating. Gorgeous accent chairs in rich colours are popular this fall, but less traditional seating is also getting lots of attention. Ottomans (doubling as cocktail tables as we mentioned above) provide extra seating and a touch of glamour. Poufs and benches are also trendy choices that can be moved about as needed when guests arrive.

Flowers & Greenery. The most classic choice of all! No accessory is more beautiful than fresh cut flowers or a growing plant. Choose a unique vase/pot and add flowers and plants to each room. Looking for low maintenance? Twig/branch displays and cacti are also trending this season.

Art. Your walls are a canvas for showcasing your taste in art. Whether you like bold abstracts, traditional landscapes or black and white photography, choose art that is meaningful to you. On trend now are ‘crafty’ looking pieces that are fun and whimsical, as well as pieces with a written message. HINT: Wall groupings around a colour or theme make a dramatic statement.

Mirrors. We’re seeing mirrors in every shape and size, many with a nod to retro looks of the 1960s and 70s. Treat yourself to a starburst mirror, a collection of small mirrors, dazzling mirrors framed in silver or gold or rustic options with farmhouse simplicity.

Boxes/Containers. Decorative boxes and containers are functional as well as attractive. They look great on any shelf or accent table and are perfect for holding remote controls, keys, gadgets or other small items. Rustic, rugged designs are especially popular right now, but you’ll also see plenty of modern and traditional styles.

Make your space uniquely and beautifully yours with accessories – it’s so much fun.

The Cocktail Table: Tips to Choose the Right Style for Your Space

October 10, 2017 by Stoney Creek Furniture

Cocktail table or coffee table? It turns out they’re two different names for exactly the same thing. But don’t you think cocktail table sounds more special occasion and more fun? I do—so that’s what we’ll use here! The truth is, whatever you call them, these tables are both practical and beautiful. They provide a convenient place to lay a beverage, snack, book or TV remote – and of course aesthetic elements like a vase, candlesticks, etc.

With entertainment season upon us, now is a great time to consider a new cocktail table. Before you shop – read on for some pointers and ideas.

Diversity. Imagine the table of your dreams – chances are – it’s out there. What do you like? What suits your space? Wood – dark, light, glossy or distressed?  Metal – gold, bronze or pewter? Glass-topped? A unique combination of materials? Slim legs or a sturdy pedestal base? Round, square or rectangle? Traditional, industrial, rustic or contemporary? The options are truly endless.

Multi-purpose. There’s no reason a cocktail table has to just have a single layer on top. Many tables now have multiple shelves, drawers, pull-outs and even lifting lids for hidden storage.

Ottoman Style. Speaking of multi-functional, one of my very favourite furniture pieces is the ottoman cocktail table. Some are equipped with drawers for storage and include a tray on top to hold drinks and snacks. Plus, it’s also a comfy seat and a footstool – and makes a gorgeous décor statement.

Focal Point. A cocktail table can be the focal point of your room. No need to match it to your end tables (unless you prefer it that way!). Choose a spectacular cocktail table, decorate it and enjoy.  How about a glass-topped table with an intricate gold base? So glamourous! Or a large farmhouse-styled table that’s beautifully rugged? Consider showcasing a collection on your coffee table, or a simple bouquet of flowers or an outstanding piece of sculpture.

Dining Space. In a small space, a cocktail table can double as a dining table. It’s fun and casual. Choose a large table, set it in style and enjoy! PS Poufs or mini-stools can be tucked under the table or kept nearby for easy access.

Multiple Tables. We always think ‘one cocktail table and two end tables’ – but why? If your room is configured with multiple seating areas (or if you simply have abundant space), consider multiple cocktail tables. How about several smaller round tables? Or perhaps two rectangular tables in different sizes? Keep the tables matching for cohesion within the room.

Other Options. Some are choosing cocktail tables that aren’t tables at all! How about a trunk, a repurposed sled or even a drum? Think WAY outside the box and find what’s right for you. A little whimsy can be wonderful.

Dining Rooms: What’s Trendy (and Timeless!) This Season

October 2, 2017 by Stoney Creek Furniture

As Fall settles in, we turn our attention to entertaining indoors. With Thanksgiving upon us and Christmas on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to update your dining room. Right now is also a very exciting time to embark on a dining room makeover. The latest trends offer the opportunity to redecorate on YOUR terms – with a look that suits how you live and the things you love. Here’s what we’re seeing…

The Joy of Juxtaposition.

The biggest trend is the allure of contrast. New pieces mixed with vintage. Rustic paired with refined. It’s dramatic and fresh. Consider a glass topped table with Louis XVI chairs; a harvest-styled table with modern side chairs; leather chairs with a metal-edged table. Be bold!

Light Wood is Back.

Simple, pure, clean. After seasons of mostly dark and distressed woods, light woods are making a comeback. (Not to worry, dark is still popular too!). For an innovative touch, incorporate a couple of darker wood chairs. Inherently informal, light woods pair nicely with either light surroundings for a very fresh look or contrasting darker walls.

More and More Mixing.

For a few seasons we’ve seen the beauty of mixing styles and materials, almost with a touch of abandon! It continues this year. Metal, glass, leather, woods (from polished to rugged) are being combined in unexpected ways. Chair options are especially diverse. For example, choose four chairs the same but with different end chairs, or add a bench seat or even upholster each chair differently (but in complementary patterns).

Traditional Endures.

Thank goodness! If you love a matched dining room suite or the classic beauty of dark, glossy wood, don’t dismay. Some home furnishing choices will always be in style. This is one of them. Enjoy!

Materials Update.

What’s new? What’s new AGAIN? Wicker is back and is a great choice for a casual space. Velvet is popular again (did it ever really leave?). Acrylic chairs remain a trendy, fun choice this season, as do metal and metal-edged chairs. Rich plain fabrics, tropical prints and classic stripes are showing up for upholstery choices and table linens.

Consider Wallpaper.

With so much open wall space, the dining room is one of the best rooms for wallpaper. Choose a classic floral, funky geometric or a hint of sparkle.

Enjoy getting your dining room ready for the season ahead! More than ever, remember, you can bend the rules and express your individuality.
