Here’s how to get started on your outdoor sanctuary.

Begin with Quality Outdoor Furniture. These days we’re choosing outdoor furniture that not only looks stunning, but is durable and long lasting. Comfort is also a top priority with pieces featuring overstuffed cushions and natural materials like wicker. You’ll also see much more than basic sofas and chairs, including modular sectionals, cocktail tables, dining sets and ottomans. As with interiors, classic transitional pieces are on trend with a nod to mid century modern with clean lines and timeless beauty. Colour wise, grey is the most popular by far, often with a green hue.

Our collection is handcrafted with impeccable style and uncompromising quality. The many outstanding features include:

  • Handcrafted weaving, done one strand at a time using high density polyurethane.
  • Strong, rust proof, long standing aluminum frames.
  • Weather proof and water resistant fabrics.
  • Upholstery that’s easily washed with mild soap and water.
  • Sold fully assembled.

With your furnishings in place, what are some of the key trends in the garden this season?

Purple. Pantone’s colour of the year, Ultra Violet, is making its way to the garden, in beautiful plants and flowers (like campanula, iris, clematis, lavender and many more) and as an accent colour for cushions, throws and table top accessories.

Fireplaces. One of the hottest trends this season is a fireplace in the garden. Ask the experts at Stoney Creek Furniture about attractive, rust resistant propane fireplaces by Napoleon.

Vegetables. As we embrace a more plant-based diet, we’re growing more veggies in our gardens. How about trying kale and spinach this season? Did you know they can even be grown in planters?

Meditation Space. Dedicate a special corner of your outdoor living area to meditation. It can be as simple as a bench surrounded by plants and including a small table for candles and accessories. Facing the sunrise or sunset will make it particularly inspirational.

Planters. Have fun and be environmentally conscious with planters made from repurposed items. I’ve seen galvanized buckets, dresser drawers, chairs and even rubber boots as planters!

Accessories. As you would indoors, complete your outdoor living room with accessories like candles, centerpieces, lanterns and plants. Add string lights for night-time sparkle.

I can’t wait for summer! Our new Stoney Creek Furniture Outdoor collection is exclusive to our store in the GTA. Do come in and experience it today!

6 Steps to Choosing the Perfect Rug

April 25, 2018 by Stoney Creek Furniture

More and more homes today have wood or tiled floors instead of wall-to-wall carpeting. The look is definitely more natural and organic – and yet, don’t you sometimes crave the coziness of carpet? Area rugs are the answer. Beyond comfort, they also create abundant décor possibilities. But you have to select a rug carefully – the wrong rug can make a space feel awkward.

When decorating a space, consider choosing your rug first. It becomes the palette foundation for the room.

Here are our 6 steps to choosing the ideal area rug every time:

    1. Style. What style is your home’s décor? Whether contemporary, traditional, modern or a more Bohemian vibe, choose a rug that suits the theme of the space for a harmonious look. For example, Persian and Oriental rugs are typically pattern-heavy and more classic, while a solid colour or geometric rug is definitely more modern. TIP: When decorating a space, consider choosing your rug first. It becomes the palette foundation for the room.
    2. Quality. Natural materials generally mean higher quality. Wool and silk are preferred, but some synthetics deliver excellent value and are better suited for high traffic areas. An obvious sign of quality is ensuring that the rug lays flat and evenly on the floor’s surface, without curling edges or uneven sides. Also check for colour vibrancy and integrity and other signs of quality including hand knotting and handmade details. Remember, handcrafted rugs age beautifully and will stand the test of time. TIP: Always use a pad under rugs to keep them in place and add comfort.
    3. Colour/Pattern. Start by looking at the tones in your floors, walls, furniture and anything else that’s staying in the room. If there’s already a lot of colour and pattern, you may want to choose a single-coloured rug, either a neutral or a shade which complements your existing décor. If you want a patterned rug with many hues, minimize the colours in your upholstery, curtains, etc.

Stoney Creek Furniture carries a variety of hand-crafted and hand-knotted area rugs.

    4. Texture. Your rug can create textural interest by contrasting it with other fabrics. For example, if your room has soft plush upholstery like velvet, a short pile rug or even sisal may look best; for a room with leather or simple fabrics, a longer, more luxurious pile is preferred.
    5. Size. In a living room, a rug should fit the size of the seating area, even if just the front legs of all the furniture pieces are on it (but a bigger rug is even better!). In the dining room, a good guideline is that the chairs should be able to be pulled back and still sit on the rug. In the bedroom, your feet should touch the rug when you get out of bed, with about 24 inches to spare on either side. A rug should always look generous versus skimpy.
    6. Layering. Two rugs side-by-side can be a great way to fill up a large space and add visual interest. Or, if you have wall-to-wall carpeting, try adding a rug on top of it for a totally new look. Finally, you can layer one rug on top of another – for example, a smaller patterned rug on top of a larger neutral rug like jute. Layering is fun and fresh!

Whether you’re redecorating a room from scratch or just want to add warmth and charm, consider adding a rug. Choose what you love and don’t be afraid to be adventurous! An area rug can singlehandedly make a room truly extraordinary. Stop by our Stoney Creek location to check out our selection of hand-crafted and hand-knotted area rugs today!

The Rachael Ray Everyday Dining Collection is available in a variety of finishes.

Getting Started.

It can be a little daunting to consider creating a piece of furniture from scratch. In fact, there are degrees of customization depending on your needs. You can do minimal customization by simply choosing your sofa/chair upholstery from a wide variety of fabric/leather options and for wood pieces, selecting the finish/colour of the wood. Or, you can go a step further with your upholstered furniture and create the size and configuration you need for your home – making a sofa condo-sized for example, or reconfiguring it as a loveseat, chair or sectional. Finally, you can go fully customizable, designing every aspect of a piece – including size, shape, arm style, leg style, and of course, fabric and finish.

Most importantly, when you’re purchasing custom furniture, be sure to choose a reputable partner that you can count on for expert guidance. At Stoney Creek Furniture, professional designers and an informed sales team are available to help you every step of the way. Spring Trend: Texture and Embellishment

April 5, 2018 by Stoney Creek Furniture

If you haven’t noticed yet, embellishment is one of the key words in décor for 2018! This spring, we’re seeing the embellishment trend really taking centre stage, married with delicious ice cream colours and sweet pastels. Here’s how to embrace embellishment in your home – as little or as much as you like!

The Boho Chic Bed

What does embellishment mean?

Embellishment in home décor is really just detailing – using textured materials, adornment and add-ons for visual and tactile interest. This season, you’ll see lots of fringing, tufting, tassels, feathers, crushed fabrics, even macramé. There’s a wonderful warmth and whimsy to embellishment, yet it can still be quite elegant depending on how you use it. Tassels and tufting, for example, are classic English pedigree looks, while macramé and feathers definitely lend a more Bohemian feel to a space.

Is this trend a whole new look?

It can be! One of the most powerful trends this year is definitely toward luxe, sensory rich and abundant. There’s also a movement toward a retro 1970s look, with lots of foliage, warm colours, yarn accessories and macramé wall hangings.

If you prefer a clean, simple look, no worries! All you need are some velvet pillows, perhaps a tufted ottoman or headboard and some tasseled throws. Keep your foundation neutral and indulge in embellished accessories in more vibrant shades.

What about embellishment on furnishings?

Tufting is our favourite furniture embellishment – and we think you’ll agree! Tufting is totally trendy today, but it’s also timeless. Translated, that means your tufted furnishings will be in style for many seasons to come. Choose a leather tufted wing back chair, a tufted tuxedo style sofa or a tufted ottoman to serve as a coffee table. How about tufted dining room chairs or a headboard? Or perhaps indulge in a tufted chaise, loveseat or sectional? Colour and style options are limitless right now!

What about embellished accessories?

Accessories are always a smart choice for any trend. How about cushions with crystal detailing for your bed? Perhaps a bedspread or throw with corner tassels? A fringed rug adds warmth and texture, while tasseled sofa cushions or knitted geometric-patterned pillows are fresh and fun. Think elegant meets eclectic; traditional meets trendy. Blend your embellished accessories with your classic pieces. And don’t forget nature’s embellishment! Our love of greenery has never been more on display with houseplants aplenty! Ferns, palms, ivies and patterned leaves/fronds are especially popular, making any space instantly more serene and welcoming.

Don’t you love the endless possibilities of a new season? Embellish your home décor this spring and you’ll discover that details really do make the difference!
